Big Things Coming

It’s been a long road, hasn’t it?

I feel like a lot of people say that. A long road, but a fun road. An exciting road. Nothing like Cormac McCarthy’s ‘The Road’, don’t worry. But a steep road, nonetheless.

And the destination is in sight.

The dream is going to happen. I know it is, because I’m going to make it happen.

Over the next two weeks I’ll be putting the finishing touches on rewrite number three of my new book, Fallen Knight (Book One in The Sixth Point trilogy). I’ve been hard at work these last 12 months, pouring my soul into this story, and I can honestly say that I have never been as excited for a book as I am for this one. It’s tense, twisted, dark, magical, explosive. It’s (hopefully) unlike anything else you’ve ever read. And it’s very dear to my heart.

I wrote up a very short hook, and a longer one will be coming soon:

For millennia, The Order of the Six Points has defended the world from evil. Today, Ash Beckerman is their newest recruit. The only problem? He thinks they killed his father. And in a world where Belief is Power, he isn’t the only one with an agenda.

My plan right now is still to go with the traditional publishing route, which means that first up is finding an agent. I already have my short list, and I’m signed up for a couple of writing conferences in the next two months. I believe in this book so strongly, though, that if all else fails, I still plan to self-publish this story early next year.

In the world of the book (set in New York), a person’s Belief translates into literal Power. Instead of believing that a god will grant you power, it is the Belief itself that gives a person, or a god, strength.

It’s scary to think about – that single-minded, focused Belief can literally change the world. Scary because it means that all the gods of history are real, because at some point in time large numbers of people Believed in them. And in all the demons, spirits, and monsters, too.

Ash Beckerman, my main character, has one defining characteristic: an indomitable will. An unwavering belief in himself. In his situation, it’s a blessing. One that grows into a curse.

Theres an exchange between him and one of the scarily Powerful Knights of the OSP that sticks with me:

“It’ll happen, I promise.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because I will make it happen.”

I’ve taken this exchange to heart, recently. I know that this story will find its way out into the world, because I know that I’m the one with the Power make it happen.

This is the first book in a trilogy that will take Ash across the world, through history, and beyond. At heart it’s about a young man haunted by tragedy and driven by vengeance, stepping into a world far darker and more complex than he ever imagined it could be. Into a society where even the gods have agendas. Into a story millennia in the making that has been waiting for just one thing: him.

And it’s a story told through a Jewish lens (my lens) that sets it apart from almost every other fantasy story like it.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey with Ash and his friends from here on out! Over the next few weeks and months, I’ll be posting far more regular updates, and I’m so excited to reconnect with you all.

More to come soon. Cheers!
